Realistic Composite

In this technical assignment you will further your application of multiple layers in Photoshop. The added element of blending and layer manipulations such as lighting will be incorporated to achieve more realistic and believable-looking results.

Instructions:

-Choose a background image as your environment

-Add 5 elements to that image that either provide additional narrative to the image or distort the reality described at the time it was shot.

-Hand in a .psd file with the layers still visible, along with a flattened .tiff file and a hard copy print made digitally.

Technical proficiency will be evaluated in both skill with layers and blending in Photoshop as well as your ability to print digitally.

Surreal 30 Layers Image

This assignment is designed to familiarize you with basic selection tools, layer and layer groups in Photoshop. This will lead into a deeper understanding of layers and compositing in Photoshop.

Instructions:

-Choose a photograph to be the base image and name it “Base” in the layers palette.

-Make three layer groups and name them appropriately. Using any of the lasso or geometric selection tools select, copy and paste image elements from other photos into your base image.

-Make sure that the pasted parts are put into the correct layer group.

-In addition to pasting each part in the correct group, each individual layer must be labeled accordingly.

-Play with the positioning of the layers as well as the size, color and opacity of each layer the create a new composite.

-You must have a minimum of 30 layers in your image.

-Once you are finished save your layered image as a .psd file with the file name yourname_layered.psd

-Flatten your image, sharpen and save a .tiff file as youname_flat.tif

-Size the flattened image so that it is 10 inches tall.

-Print the flattened file on a 8.5 x 11 piece of paper.

-Turn in the layered file, flattened file via cd, and print at critique.

People/Place Assignment

This assignment is designed to allow the student to explore some of the ideas and concepts stressed over the past few weeks of tech shooting assignments. Students are to explore the idea of either people/place/space as it is applied to its culture and environment. This critiqued assignment will ask students to dig deeper into their own interests and not just document a person/people or place but also making decisions about outcomes based on personal biases. Is the document factual? Can it be factual? Do I accept the “reality” photography provides, or do I rebuke it?

-8 images exploring either people/place and the cultural context surrounding that chosen subject.

Shoot a minimum of five rolls of film or 180 digital images that will be turned in with your assignment. This personal assignment will help you better understand the idea of people and place in photography and will also help describe what the photographic document really is (or is not).

Portrait/Staged Scene Assignment

This assignment is designed to give students some experience with setting up the elements in a shot, whether they be the human subject or a scene staged by the photographer.

-Six images exploring either portraiture, staged scene or any combination of the two.

Please take time to make multiple set-ups (at least three) with different subjects to add variation to the series. Shoot a minimum of four rolls of film or 144 digital images that will be turned in with your assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how to work with people and props to generate the type of imagery and outcomes you seek.

Place/Document Assignment

Each student must pick a place that is special to him or her and photograph it. Make any type of photograph at your chosen location (portrait, landscape, object, etc) that will convey how and why this location is meaningful for you. Also try experimenting with as many different forms of composition as possible. With your photographs you must meet the following criteria:

-One image with the subject in the middle of the frame

-One image where the subject is off center

-One image with nothing in the middle activating the edges of the photograph

-One symmetrical image (as close as possible)

Please take time to make multiple trips to your selected place in order to capture what you wish to photograph. Shoot a minimum of four rolls of film or 144 digital images that will be turned in with your assignment. Conceptually, the purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how a series of photographs can work together to convey a particular emotion or idea.

The Camera, Aperture/Exposure

Tech assignment 5 is perhaps one of the most useful and important exercises that we will do this semester. Each student will choose a particular location to explore and photograph. You may photograph anything you wish as long as it is within the area you choose. You must demonstrate your understanding of aperture and shutter speed with the five photographs by:

-Showing motion (Slow Exposure, less than 1/15th)

-Stopping motion (Fast Exposure, faster than 1/90th)

-Making a photograph with shallow depth of field (Large Aperture, less than f8)

-Making a photograph with a great depth of field (Small Aperture, more than f22)

You can meet more than one of the above criteria in a single photograph. For example, you could make a photograph that both stops motion and has a shallow depth of field.

Please take time to make multiple trips to your location in order to figure out what or who interests you. Shoot a minimum of four rolls of film or 144 digital images that will be turned in with your assignment.

The Camera, Space and Angle (Attempt 1)

This shooting-based assignment is designed to show students the effect of space and angle within a 2-Dimensional image. Content is open to choice. Attention to the detail and composition in particular will be stressed.

Within these 7 images students will incorporate the following criteria:

1. One image shot from a very low angle (ground level)
2. One image shot from eye level
3. One image shot from a very high angle (above head height)
4. One image showing expanding space (open space)
5. One image showing contracting space (closed-in space)
6. One portrait showing a dominant angle
7. One portrait showing a submissive angle
